There is another kind of peer pressure that can be equally powerful, and that is the pressure that exists inside our heads. We all have perceptions of what the social norms are, namely, what we think the people we care about are doing. Even though no one is around to twist our arms, we are subject to imaginary arm-twisting by conforming to what we think others would want us to do.
